# How to Track Macros in 2026 Without Weighing Every Meal

> Macros are protein, carbs, and fat. You only need tight protein, a calorie cap, and a log fast enough to use on a real dinner. Here is the setup.

Macros are the three energy nutrients: protein, carbohydrate, and fat. If you came here because someone said "just hit your macros," they meant: hit protein, stay near a calorie number, and stop micromanaging the rest until the habit sticks. Option 1 is Khatwa. Photograph dinner. See calories and protein. Ask the coach what is left. You do not rebuild the day in a search box.

## What each macro is for

- **Protein.** Muscle repair, fullness, and a higher burn during digestion. Set this first. See [how much protein to eat per day](https://www.khatwa.se/en/blog/how-much-protein-should-i-eat-per-day.md).
- **Fat.** Hormones, cooking, and satiety. Do not drive it to zero. Most people do well leaving 20-35% of calories here without a strict gram target at the start.
- **Carbohydrate.** Training fuel and the rest of the calorie budget. Rice, bread, fruit, and potatoes live here. They are not the enemy. The portion is.

## A beginner split that does not require a spreadsheet

Pick calories first with a small deficit if fat loss is the goal. Then:

1. Set protein at 1.6 g per kilogram.
1. Let fat and carbs fill whatever calories remain. Prefer carbs around training days if you lift.
1. Ignore fiber, sugar, and micronutrient dashboards until you can log 6 days in a row.

That is enough. Flexible dieting is not 40/40/20 forever. It is a calorie cap plus a protein floor. If you want the calorie cap itself, use [calorie deficit explained](https://www.khatwa.se/en/blog/calorie-deficit-explained.md).

## How to log macros when the food is not in a barcode

Barcode apps fail the meals you actually eat: a family tray, a restaurant plate, leftovers. Those meals still have macros. Photograph them. Adjust the portion if the first guess looks off. Save repeats as favorites.

If you cook with oil, add it. If the rice is a heap, say so. Perfect grams are optional. A complete day is not.

## Common macro-tracking mistakes

- Chasing fat and carb targets so tightly that you skip logging when you cannot hit them.
- Counting protein powder and then eating a 200-calorie sauce you never enter.
- Using a US database for Arabic or Swedish home food and wondering why the scale disagrees.

Khatwa is built for photo-first logging, Arabic and English, and a coach that already knows today's macros. You ask what to eat next. You do not rebuild the day in a search box.
